To me helicopters have a very sinister resonance. A plane seems more friendly somehow. A plane’s got people doing normal things like visiting family, going on holiday, going on work. A helicopter on the other hand seems synonymous with James Bond style baddies or very wealthy people who can’t be bothered to go on normal transport or police surveillance or important people visiting. All these perceptions are pure media creations as I’ve never actually been on a helicopter. So in many ways the sound of a helicopter can fit any fantasy. Even now when I hear a helicopter I wonder which spy is being chased and hounded. I think it’s interesting how sound evokes imagination based on other people’s imaginations. Like sleigh bells. Most of us haven’t heard it in real life but it immediately conjures up Christmas and snow. Well these helicopters evoke a sense of sinister adventure.
